Class Information

Silversmithing Curriculum:

From Metal to Masterpiece

Every class at Foundry is designed to meet you where you are — whether you’re picking up a jeweler’s saw for the first time or ready to work with sterling silver.
Each workshop builds on the previous one, combining guided demonstrations with independent, hands-on exploration.

All classes include:

► Materials (copper or brass; silver available in Level 4)
► Use of shared tools and studio equipment
► Individual guidance and demonstrations
► Checklists and resources for continuing the craft at home

Teaching Style and Studio Experience

Each class begins with live demonstrations and transitions into open studio time. Students are encouraged to design freely, experiment with texture and finish, and explore their creative intuition.Tools such as metal stamps, letter stamps, patinas, and polishing supplies will be available to personalize each piece.

“Every student leaves The Foundry with more than just a finished project — they leave with the knowledge, confidence, and spark to keep creating.”

Level 1 — Introduction to Metalsmithing

Focus: Sawing · Shaping · Forming · Finishing (no soldering)
Duration: 2 days

Day 1:

Students will learn the foundations of metalsmithing — how to safely handle tools, saw and shape metal, and form simple designs.

Projects: keychain pendant or earrings

Day 2:

Building upon day one, students will explore forming and texturing techniques while creating a cuff bracelet from copper or brass.

Takeaway:

A beginner’s understanding of basic tools and techniques, two completed projects, and a starter checklist for setting up a home metalsmithing workspace.

Level 2 — Introduction to Soldering

Prerequisite: Level 1
Focus: Torch Safety · Soldering · Assembly
Duration: 2 days

Day 1:

This class begins with a deep dive into torch setup, safety, and control.

Students will complete three guided soldering exercises:

Sweat soldering — joining two sheets of metal
Cube construction — creating a five-sided form
Domed solder — soldering a domed disc to a base plate

Day 2:

Time to finish projects, refine techniques, and experiment.

Takeaway:

Confidence using a torch, an understanding of soldering principles, finished practice pieces, and a recommended tools + supplies checklist for continued learning.

Level 3 — Intermediate: Bezel Setting in Copper

Prerequisite: Levels 1 & 2
Focus: Bezel Setting · Ring Construction · Stone Selection
Duration: 2 days

Day 1:

Demonstration of the entire ring-making process — from measuring and sizing to bezel fitting and soldering.

Students will choose a stone and design their own ring, applying all previous skills.

Day 2:

Dedicated work time to complete pieces, ask questions, and experiment with techniques like stamping, patina, or texture.

Takeaway:

A completed stone-set ring, new design and measurement formulas, and practical experience with bezels and copper fabrication.

Level 4 — Intermediate: Bezel Setting in Silver

Prerequisite: Levels 1–3
Focus: Silver Fabrication · Advanced Materials
Duration: 1 day

Day 1:

Building upon Level 3, this workshop offers the same process using sterling silver instead of copper.
Students can select from a range of higher-quality stones (optional upgrades available).

Takeaway:

A finished silver ring, elevated craftsmanship, and confidence to continue creating independently.
